Margaret is a sponsored elder in our Bangalore, India sponsor site. The 78-year-old lives in a long-term care home run by the Good Shepherd Sisters, who also run the site. Margaret has been supported through Chalice for 22 years. She came to the Good Shepherd’s convent 60 years ago. Today, her main carer is Sr. Preethi. Margaret does not have any family.
In early July 2024, Margret slipped and fell. She said she was in pain and couldn’t bear her weight on her right leg. She underwent a scan and test. Sr. Preethi took her to the hospital, where they ran scans and tests. She was diagnosed with a fraction on the top of her right hip bone.
She underwent surgery to insert steel pins into her hip. She remained in hospital for another five days. She was discharged, and she and Sr. Preethi are following the doctor’s instructions to take her medication, walk with a walker, and care for her incision wound.
The cost of treatment incurred was $2,300.03 CAD. Sr. Preethi requested financial support to meet the medical expenses. Their small, charitable nursing home cannot easily meet these costs. The Bangalore site has therefore requested to cover Mrs. Margaret’s surgery, treatment, scans, medication, and ancillary charges.
