Selvaraj is 82 years old, the father of Fr. Don Bosco, Chalice’s Tamil sponsor site director. He lives with Fr. Don Bosco’s elder brother – who supports the family as an agricultural labourer-- and two married sisters.
Since February 2023, Selvaraj has had difficulty eating and opening his mouth. In early March 2023, he consulted an ENT specialist, who identified an abnormality in his upper palate. A biopsy confirmed cancer, and so Selvaraj immediately began radiation and chemotherapy.
A year later, he developed severe tooth pain, they found cancer around his tooth. Again, he underwent chemotherapy and immunotherapy; a PET scan confirmed the cancer had not spread. After two months, he was hospitalized twice more: once for abdominal pain, then for severe shoulder pain.
Since June, Selvaraj has been home with his family and recovering. But each of his consultations, scans, treatments, hospitalizations, and medicines come at a private cost to the family. Over the year of medical emergencies, Selvaraj’s sons and daughters have tried to ask for help from extended relatives, but with more than fifty individual charges amounting to $5,243.68 CAD, the family is under too much financial strain.
Fr. Don Bosco has therefore requested support to cover his father’s treatment. These expenses include hospitalizations, diagnostic scans and tests, medicine, physiotherapy, and professional fees.
