Baskar is 11 years old and lives with his mother and sister, Pavalakodi. He lost his father, and so his mother is grateful that both Baskar and Pavalakodi have the extra financial support of Chalice sponsors.

In late September, Baskar told his mother that he had pain and swelling in a sensitive area. She took him for scans in the local hospital, where he was referred to a specialist. After more specialized diagnostic imagery, the specialist diagnosed Baskar with epididymo-orchitis, an inflammation of his epididymis.He recommended surgical treatment.

Baskar underwent the procedure and went home the next day. He took medication for three days post-op and the Tamil site staff happily report that he is feeling much better.

But Baskar's emergency surgery has incurred hospital bills of $771.72 CAD. His mother has difficulty making ends meet with her income as an agricultural labourer, and so this expense is far beyond her means. The Tamil sponsor site staff have therefore requested to pay the bill, which is for Baskar's ultrasound, lab and operation charges, and his medicine.
