Yolanda is a 22-year-old sponsored young woman pursuing a Civil Engineering degree in university. Yolanda started experiencing vision loss, noticing that she was having trouble reading the blueprints at school. Yolanda has been blessed with a Chalice sponsor since she was five years old.

Chalice critical needs - Medical expenses for Bishnu, Assam, India

She lives with her parents and two younger sisters, and the family relies on her father’s earnings as a contract maintenance worker. Her mother, María, is no longer able work as a cleaner due to health concerns but remains an active member of her Chalice family circle.

Yolanda started experiencing vision loss, noticing that she was having trouble reading the blueprints at school. When she worked on the computer, her eyes burned, and she developed headaches. Her mother took her to the ophthalmologist, who diagnosed myopia and a high astigmatism in both eyes, as well as a 50% decrease in vision in her left eye.

The most effective treatment is laser eye surgery on her corneas and a crosslinking refractive surgery as a preventative measure. The doctor’s prognosis is a total improvement in her right eye and a partial restoration of the vision lost in her left. Without the surgery, her vision loss could continue.

Yolanda, her family, and the Chiclayo sponsor site are all anxious to resolve her vision problems so that her education and career pursuits are not disrupted or derailed. The cost of the two operations on both eyes is $3,098.79 CAD, which is more than her father can afford, so the Chiclayo staff have requested assistance for her to have the surgery.

Yolanda is a role model to her sisters and the Chiclayo sponsor site community. Your support will enable Yolanda to return to her studies and reach her goal of becoming a civil engineer.
