Project Location: Lutsk, VOL Subsite
Project Type: Health
Project Code: UPP0620C
Background: Established in 1999, the Pochaiv site serves 1900 children in three sub sites, spread across the Ivano-Frankivsk and Volyn Regions.
The site supports children in both large urban centres and small rural villages. The sub site in Volyn has been part of the Pochaiv site since its establishment.
In the community served in the Volyn sub site, there are two sponsored children living with cerebral palsy and 84 non-sponsored children growing up with the same condition. Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition that affects the children's motor skills, ability to walk, and their speech. Early interventions and rehabilitation therapies can significantly improve their physical development and strength, increasing their ability to do tasks, move independently, and communicate. But in Lutsk, there are no effective rehabilitation and physiotherapy options, nor any training for their parents to conduct therapy at home. The absence of these programs will damage the children's potential to grow in strength and autonomy.
The government is not able to provide facilities or professionals, and so a group of parents of children with cerebral palsy have come together to provide it for themselves. As volunteers, they will lead parents and children through physical strength exercises and vital communication techniques.
Project Objectives: The goal of this project is to equip a rehabilitation room at the program center with up-to-date training equipment for physical condition strengthening for children with cerebral palsy. The volunteer parents will conduct one-on-one and group classes, focusing both on motor and speech skills. They will also work with the children's parents to support and advise them through the challenges of parenting a child with a physical disability, and give them tools to accompany their children to a healthy, independent adulthood.
The six-month training portion of the program will benefit 86 sponsored and non-sponsored children, along with 12 family members of sponsored children.
Budget in Canadian funds: $31,693.00
