Project Location: Borschiv Area Schools, Ternopil, Ukraine
Project Type: Health
Project Code: UTT1219
Background: The Chalice Ternopil sponsor site opened in 1988.
It is administered by a local foundation, World of Children, with Luba Tsytsyk as director. The site is committed to improving quality of life and promotes spiritual growth of sponsored children and their families by providing material assistance and opportunities for social development through delivery of nutritious food, clothing, and educational, psychological, and medical care. There are currently 1950 sponsored children spread out around the region, in over 400 communities. Most come from large, poor, or low income families that cannot provide for, or give adequate care to, their children. Many children are being raised by elderly grandparents.
The ongoing economic instability in the country affects people enormously. There is a lack of infrastructure and jobs with little hope for the future. Most families survive on small subsidiary farms. Young people are leaving in search of jobs and a better life. Villages are shrinking and disappearing. The few people lucky enough to have a job often do not get paid for many months and earn minimal wages, while professionals, including university-trained teachers, earn only slightly higher. Desperation and poverty can lead to abuse, alcohol and drugs, resulting in a whole new level of despair. It is difficult to see the children in this impoverished state and imagine their future.
Every year the quality of tap water in Borschiv area schools deteriorates further. It currently does not meet basic health standards. It should also be noted that toilets are the main source of infection in schools and the inability to wash hands is the cause of frequent illnesses in children. The vast majority of school toilets do not meet the basic hygiene requirements.
To determine the quality of water in community schools, a chemical and biological analysis of water has been performed. Four schools receive water from the city water supply system and two schools receive water from wells in the territory of the schools. In none of these schools does the water meet potable water quality standards. Nitrate levels in the water exceed the norm by 1.5-3 times. The level of hardness exceeds the norm by 1.5-2.5 times.
Project Objectives: This project will result in the installation of water filtration systems on the water taps at six schools, making purified water available for children drinking/filling water bottles and provide the school with purified water for any food preparation. In addition, this project will repair and equip bathrooms with complete replacement of the water supply and drainage system, ventilation, toilets and wall tiles.
This project will benefit approximately 2,150 people, including 1,850 students (50 sponsored children) and approximately 300 school staff (teachers and support staff) by creating proper sanitary and hygiene conditions and making good quality potable water available in the schools.
Budget in Canadian Funds: $50,046.98
