In Haiti, education support is more crucial than ever this year. Political violence, gang warfare, and economic instability have all contributed to a crisis where Haitian families are food insecure and on the verge of starvation. The price of essential items like rice and oil has nearly tripled in a few months.
Struggling parents are facing the school year, which starts in October, with increasing trepidation. Our Haiti North site staff have seen a significant rise in tuition fees, uniforms, and school supplies over the past two years. Tuition fees at some schools have increased by as much as 20%, and the price of uniforms have doubled. School textbooks, which were already expensive, have become even more inaccessible for many families.
In addition to school fees, families are facing a significant increase in food costs, putting additional pressure on their budgets. Families are being forced to choose between feeding their children and paying school fees.
In the last three months, about 26 sponsored children had to drop out of school because their parents could no longer cover all the tuition costs. Among them, some have traveled to the Dominican Republic in hopes of finding work to support their siblings remaining in Haiti.
These circumstances have prompted the Haiti North site to request $46,608.09 CAD to give 328 secondary students additional funding for education costs. These funds will be added to their regular sponsorship funds.
Your support for this program will be vital, allowing children to remain in school despite growing financial obstacles. This ensures that these children continue to receive an education, which opens brighter prospects for them.
Budget in Canadian Funds: $46,608.09 CAD
Please note that any donations that exceed the request will be used to fund other community projects that may arise.
